Appellations
Your Wine Experience Begins With a Visit to The Yakima Valley!
MOVE OVER NAPA VALLEY…. Keep your eye on the appellations of Yakima Valley and Red Mountain. Some say these side-by-side appellations will be the nation’s next Napa Valley. Currently, more than 50 Washington wineries are located in the Yakima Valley and Red Mountain wine regions. Not all are open for public tasting. Be sure to allow time to visit a number of these Yakima and Red Mountain wineries, and to wander the many back roads of the area, especially in the autumn. Roll down the window and breathe deeply.
Yakima Valley and Red Mountain wine regions are among Washington’s most important appellations. While the Yakima Valley lies within the larger Columbia Valley, it is identified as its own appellation, just as the Red Mountain area lies within the Yakima Valley, yet is authorized as its own American Viticultural Area (AVA).
The Yakima Valley appellation is defined within the larger Columbia Valley appellation by geologic folds in the earth — the Ahtanum Ridge, Rattlesnake Hills, and Horse Heaven Hills. The sunny slopes of the Yakima Valley foothills provide the perfect growing conditions for producing intensely flavored, balanced and complex wines such as merlot, cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, sangiovese, cabernet franc, viognier and syrah. Long sun-drenched days and cool evenings in this desert climate yield bold, hearty, and luscious world-class wines.
